Oradour-sur-Glane, located in Haute-Vienne, is sadly known for the atrocities committed by the “Das Reich” Division following the defeat in Normandy on June 6, 1944. On June 10, more than 640 people were massacred (burned in the Church) by this division during its retreat in retaliation.
Mahir AKKAYA was personally received by Mr. Benoit SADRY, president of the National Association of Families of the Martyrs of Oradour-sur-Glane, and by Mr. Philippe LACROIX, the mayor of the town.
About thirty survivors of the massacre were able to commemorate this tragic event. When Mahir AKKAYA made his donation, only one survivor remained, Mr. Robert HÉBRAS, whom Mahir AKKAYA had the honor of meeting at his home and with whom he shared a coffee.
Usually reserved and reluctant to tourist requests, Mr. HÉBRAS emotionally agreed to discover the artwork “The Angel with the Child”. He called this gift in homage to the victims “the most beautiful gift of his life.” Mahir AKKAYA is particularly proud to have been personally welcomed by Mr. HÉBRAS, who warmly embraced him before being deeply affected by his passing, which occurred about a month after their meeting.
During this cordial visit, Messrs. SADRY and LACROIX emphasized the originality of this donation, which will be displayed in the church of Oradour-sur-Glane.
On this occasion, Mahir AKKAYA presented his patronage approach. Exceptionally, they expressed their willingness to accept additional works from the same artist and have already planned an exhibition space in the church for these works.
They also presented him with a letter of thanks expressing their desire to continue this collaboration through patronage. The donation was formalized by an official agreement.
Local, national, and international media (print press, television, radio, Internet) widely covered this exceptional initiative (see the “Press” section on the website).
The thank-you letter from Mr. Benoit SADRY and Mr. Philippe LACROIX is available on the website. If you wish to consult it, please send your request to Mahir AKKAYA using the contact form.
